The Downtown Club of Calgary started Kamp Kiwanis in 1951, and has supported it in every year since. Kamp Kiwanis empowers youth to explore, think critically, connect with their communities, and to make the most of life for themselves and others. The Kamp is now an independent organization, but our Club retains strong relationships with Kamp. In addition to supporting them on an annual basis, many of our members are staff or former counsellors.
Gear Up For Winter
The Gear Up event offers vulnerable youth winter supplies, health services, and self-care in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s not your usual resource fair; instead, it’s a chance for youth to step “off the streets” and into a supportive environment. By fostering healthy connections, we empower youth to make positive life changes. Each year, individuals, businesses, and agencies contribute time, donations, and support, creating a caring and uplifting afternoon.
The Kiwanis Club of Calgary Downtown has proudly supporting Gear-Up since 2023, and helps pay for the rent required to host the event.
Closer to Home Community Services
Closer to Home Community Services (CTH) is a charitable organization located in Calgary, AB since 1995. CTH provides wide range of services designed to meet the unique needs of children, youth and families.
Their vision is to ensure that every child is thriving within supportive family and community relationships.
In one of their programs, Closer to Home works with youth that is referred by Calgary and Area Child and Family Services Authority (CFSA) and provides a home for vulnerable youth while families are working towards reunification. Professional Teaching-Parents live in the home and create a family style environment for a youth in care – who typically range in age from 10 to 18 . The youth’s family is encouraged to visit as often as possible with hopes of reunification and the Teaching Parents engage the parents to come to the home and work with the team to move the intervention forward.
The Kiwanis Club of Calgary plans on sponsoring 2 initiatives in one of these homes – an outdoor recreation area and an indoor reading nook. The outdoor space includes new patio equipment and new basketball net for the youth to use. The indoor space will include refurbishing and bolstering the games room and create a reading nook for the youth.

You tell us! We need ideas and energy for new projects. Our average age is younger than many of the other service clubs in the area – and have kids and professional lives. We understand that you have other obligations and try to be respectful of your time while wanting to make a difference.
Kiwanis International is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. It is committed to serving the children of the world. Therefore, our projects have a child focus, but beyond that – we’d love to hear your ideas!
